Greenfield, Wisconsin native, Alan Kulwicki, had been racing stock cars for over 10 years before coming to the big leagues. In fact, he was one of the top 5 drivers in the American Speed Association (ASA) by 1984. Alan was a virtual unknown when he secured sponsorship to run 5 Cup races in a brand new Ford Thunderbird, built and owned by Bill Terry.  His first race was Richmond, September 1985.  With sponsorship from Quincy’s Steak House, Allen ran the 125 qualifying race for the 1986 Daytona 500.  He missed a spot in the field by one or two positions lost on the very last lap.  He didn't quit.  The next race at Rockingham, he was the highest finishing rookie driver.  That was more like it! He established his own team, bought the car from Bill Terry, ran 23 races and took the 1986 Rookie of the Year title.
